Celebrate our Pillars of Palmer: Eastside Day Video and Library Archive Now Available

Palmer Campus in Downtown Charleston, South Carolina celebrated its 2017 Eastside Day Celebration during Spirit Week at Trident Technical College by recognizing retirees, college faculty and community allies by naming them as Pillars of Palmer for significant contributions to the college and the Eastside community. Listen to their stories regarding what the recognition meant to them. The videos and photographs of the honorees were produced by Trident Technical College students in the Film, Media and Visual Arts Division.

D.  Those who live and work on the East Side know the name St. Julian Devine—it’s the name of the community center located in the old city incinerator, on East Bay Street between Blake and Cooper Streets. But who was the man behind the name.  According to a plaque at the center, St. Julian Devine was born in Berkeley County on July 5, 1911 but moved to Charleston as a youngster because his father worked for the railroad. He was the seventh of eight children born to Frank and Sarah Wise Devine, and the only one to survive childhood. What is the Educational Opportunity Center?

The  Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) is a federally funded educational outreach TRIO program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education to promote postsecondary education to underrepresented populations. The EOC motivates and assists low-income, first-generation adults who want to begin, resume, or continue their education beyond the high school level. The mission of the program is to expand awareness about educational opportunities and postsecondary education options to low-income first generation individuals throughout the Tri-county area. The goal of the project is to increase the number of Tri-county adults who enroll in postsecondary (college) education institutions. The EOC program assists adults who are interested in continuing their education to the postsecondary (college) level. Each year, EOC serves approximately 2,000 adults from the Tri-county community. New Mercedes-Benz Vans Course to be Offered on TTC-Downtown Palmer Campus

The TTC -Downtown Palmer Campus will be hosting classes for students who are training to potentially work for Mercedes-Benz Vans. The Post and Courier reports that "With its $500 million manufacturing campus expected to open during the second half of this year, Mercedes-Benz Vans is participating in a pair of events next week aimed at finding the 1,300 workers who will build Sprinter vans at the company's Palmetto Commerce Park site . . . Charleston County will host meetings on Jan. 18 and Jan. 20 to help county residents interested in working for Mercedes-Benz Vans obtain information about available positions and find the training they will need. Among the jobs that will be available are those in the body and paint shops as well as in assembly and maintenance."
